Compositor
2D computer animation | 2D drawn animation | 3D computer animation | Stop Motion
- Constructs the final image by combining layers of previously made material, including special effects, graphics, 2D animation, live action and static background plates and rendered computer animation
- The role fits in the creative animation and visual effects industry
- Responsible for thoroughly understanding the computer-generated animation process and having the relevant artistic skills
- The best pathway leading to the role is most likely to enter the compositing department and become a Roto Artist then work your way up
- Alternatively, you could gain an understanding of compositing in layers for 2D Animation by using programmes such as Adobe After Effects
- There are lots of levels in the compositing department and the role described here is in the mid level of compositing
- Also you could apply to become a VFX Trainee through Trainee Finder, this gives you a practical hands on experience in the industry helping you build all-important contacts that are essential when competing for a job
- If you have the right talent and skills, you could progress to become a Sequence Head, a Senior Compositor or a Compositing Supervisor
- From this if you excel, you could try to become a VFX Supervisor
Armourer
Art Department
- Deal with the use of weapons and firearms on film sets
- Make sure weapons are used legally, safely and correctly
- Carry out risk assessments and safety briefings
- Must be licensed and on set when weapons and firearms are used, to meet legal requirements
- Check the script, working with the Producer, Director and Properties Master, to put together a list of weapons needed
- Research the style of weaponry according to the period and type of film
- Consult with the Production Designer and the Prop Maker on the design of any tailor-made weapons
- Advise on the legal requirements of relevant firearm laws, and produce a full risk assessment.
- Responsible for contacting the police to get the appropriate permissions if a scene is shot outside of the studio
- Sourcing weapons needed either hiring them from a licensed Armoury, or using their own
- Setting up a safety brief of controls for the Actors and crew.
- They explain safe distances and areas, and draw up an On Set Code of Practice
- Teach Actors in the correct use of the firearms, explaining possible dangers
- Help on choreographing any gunfire action sequences
- Make sure that any firearms are locked in a secure case when not in use
- Experience is required in the Props Departments of film productions, and an apprenticeship with an experienced Armourer. You can also move into this role from a background in the military or police
- Needs many years of training and experience in the safe handling of weapons in both cases
Greensmen
Art Department
- Ordering, placing, and maintaining vegetation on film sets
- Building landscapes in a studio and dressing landscapes or greening interiors in different styles and periods
- Needs to have a in-depth knowledge of plants and good attention to detail
- Needs an eye for creating realistic natural environments
- Need good creative problem solving skills
- Needs to be able to work quickly and under pressure and be physically fit
- Needs 2some specialist skills such as masonry, woodwork, or making artificial foliage
- Requires understanding of the relevant health and safety laws and procedures
- You won’t find a set route for promotion within the Art Department, but you will benefit from getting experience in a related horticultural area such as landscape architecture, tree surgery, forestry or gardening
Prop Maker
Art Department
- Making props for the property department
- Adapting or modifying bought-in props
- Needs a wide knowledge of the basics of prop making and good knowledge of computer design packages
- Requires work to be carried out safely with materials like fibreglass, latex, foam and polystyrene
- Competent in working with a variety of different machinery and tools
- Needs specialist skills such as sign writing, upholstery, sculpture, casting, furniture making and need to be flexible and versatile
- Needs to work with imagination and ingenuity and be open to learning new skills and techniques
- Be able to work to external deadlines and be able to work on your own initiative
- Requires awareness of relevant health and safety laws and procedures
- May need more specialized training in areas like graphic design
Location Manager

- Finding ideal locations for a film shoot
- Negotiating fees, terms and permissions
- Managing the location during the shoot
- Needs plenty of initiative and be able to visualize and find potential locations
- Requires excellent organizational skills good negotiating skills
- Requires an understanding of location fees and be able to work within budgets
- Understand contracts and local authority processes for permits
- Requires good problem solving and communication skills and needs to be reliable and enthusiastic, flexible and able to work long hours
Requires a full driving licence and good working knowledge of health and safety requirements

I would utilise these skills within the college TV Production by putting my creative mind and leadership skills to produce a great TV production and delegate the best people to suit the various roles in a production.
Task 6
The top 5 job roles I would like to lead in to within the film and television sector are Visual Effects Supervisor, Lighting Technician, Producer, Director and Storyboard Artist.
Director
- The driving creative force in a film's production - visualizing and defining the style and structure of the film, then bringing it to life
- Carrying out duties such as casting, script editing, shot composition, shot selection and editing
- Requires exceptional artistic vision and creative skills and unerring commitment
- Need to delegate and collaborate with others and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Able to work intensively for long hours and pay attention to detail
Visual Effects Supervisor
- Evaluation of which part of a production will need visual effects
- Making sure the VFX shots are filmed correctly on set
- Negotiation with the production crew and budget to discuss the workability of the VFX work
- Leading a team of artists to see the final VFX shots to fulfillment
Storyboard Artist
- Illustration of the narrative, planning shots, and drawing panels to demonstrate action and maintain continuity between scenes of an animation
Lighting Technician
